Contemporary Mobiles

These contemporary mobiles are based on the same balance structure as a classic Calder mobile, which is essentially a whippletree mechanism turned upside down. Each part in these mobiles is suspended and balanced and able to move independently with the air currents. There might be some Constructivism / Deconstructivism in these? Maybe a hint of Futurism? These suspended kinetic sculptures are still in progress. They’re made of steel.

While designing and making these mobiles, I rode my bike to my studio and back home every day past the construction site for the Institute for Contemporary Art designed by star architect Steven Holl – see photos of the finished building. I often stopped for a bit to take a snap shot and study the structurally complex building taking shape that yet seemed to accomplish such simple elegance.
